Chemical Imbalance Theory
Quick Conservative founder, Jessica Walters, created the website 'Prayers and Apples' in 2010 to counter the chemical imbalance theory and promote psychosocial interventions for depression and anxiety. A summary of her efforts is published on the Prayers and Apples blog.
Jessica's full thesis, also available on Prayers and Apples and completed in 2015, is titled 'Deconstructing the Chemical Imbalance Theory: A Strategic Starting Point for Counter-Campaigns.'
Deacon succinctly summarized in the peer-reviewed journal Clinical Psychology Review (2013) that scientists have yet to find "credible evidence" of the chemical imbalance theory.
In late July 2022, a systematic review published by Molecular Psychiatry put the final nail in the coffin for the chemical imbalance theory. A few weeks later, in a study co-authored by the FDA, researchers looked at 232 placebo-controlled trials of 73,388 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder, finding only "about 15% of participants have a substantial antidepressant effect beyond a placebo effect in clinical trials."
