Understand Iran in 81 seconds.
Iran funds terror organizations including Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, and the Taliban – which is why every single person screaming “free Palestine” should be screaming “free Iran” louder. Because if Hamas – which governs Gaza – is destabilized, you’re looking at major de-escalation of Israeli conflict, blockades lifting, increased international aid, and free elections if Hamas is replaced with non-terrorists. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg for the toppling of “bad guys” around the globe if the current Iranian protests lead to the removal of Islamic leadership.
Iran is currently governed by the Islamic Republic, but as recently as 1978 it was a modern, secular monarchy. In 1979, Ayatollah Khomeini overthrew the secular shah and held 52 U.S. hostages when the shah fled to the U.S. That’s what Ben Affleck’s movie, Argo, is about. Fast-forward to today and the country - where women once wore mini skirts and partied at nightclubs - is now subject to Sharia law. Women are arrested for not wearing hijabs, penalties in court cases include lashings, and same-sex couples are put to death.
On December 28, Iranians began protesting the economy, but the protests quickly turned into a broader revolt against the Islamic Republic – which has retaliated by killing what some estimate may be as many as 12,000 citizens in 18 days. Others place the death toll closer to 3,000 with over 18,000 arrested. Confirmation is difficult due to internet blackouts. At the time of this video’s production, Iran is said to have paused planned executions following Trump’s strong suggestion of military intervention.
