United Nations Human Rights Council
The UN Human Rights Council is made of 47 Member States.
According to the United Nations:
The General Assembly takes into account the candidate States' contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights, as well as their voluntary pledges and commitments in this regard.
In January, Hillel Neuer, Executive Director of United Nations Watch, published a viral tweet (3.3 million views) noting that 70% of 2023 Council Member States are now non-democracies.
As Neuer explains:
When the world elects regimes like China, Cuba, Pakistan, to its highest human rights body, that’s like naming Al Capone and his gang to fight organized crime. It’s a betrayal.
